According to the state police of Quintana-Roo, this morning an army helicopter opened fire on this Hawker private jet (Registration XB-RCM) , which in turn landed on a Federal highway.
The police say the jet was supposedly used by a cartel to transport drugs. Three theories are entertained right now:
1. The jet was set on fire by the army helicopter, and it landed already lit, the crew escaped into the jungle
2. The plane landed without issue and then the crew set it on fire after they escaped.
3: The plane landed, the crew took a bunch of drugs out of it and then set it on fire, then also abandoned the car they used to escape km after.
How does an army helicopter down a private jet capable of flying at twice the speed? Mexico only has a dozen or so fighter jets, and last time I checked they were stationed in Santa Lucia AFB near Mexico City, not in the Yucatan peninsula.

I’m no expert in these matters, but if the jet were flying at low altitude, then it was probably flying at armed helicopter speeds. And it wouldn’t take much shooting to make it no longer flyable. And if shot by a helicopter, could it have been so after having landed?

Shot by gun or by missile? Are Mexico’s helicopters armed with air-to-air missiles?

Why would they willingly land on an open federal highway?
Maybe it was just after takeoff and the helicopter was perfectly placed, and it was coincidentally successful.

Gun I suppose, in other pictures the jet looks practically intact... just on fire...

I think, if you’d let me take a deep inhale of that smoke, I might able glean some insight into the matter. Or, maybe three...

Landing on the highway to offload the drugs, perhaps?
¿Eres mexicano? ¿Como se dice “federal highway” en Español en Mé xico?

But it’s kinda too obvious to land on an open public highway... even if it was at 7:30 in the morning...
It depends. In the nomenclature all of them are carreteras federales , but in reality some federal highways resemble US numbered highways (No divider or median, only two lanes), while some resemble interstates (median/divider, at least four lanes), this one is a two lane highway with no divider. If you drive on one, you might notice some are called autopistas , specially the more scenic ones like the one from Mexico City to Acapulco which is called the autopista del sol or carretera federal 95 .
When highways are toll roads, they have a D after the number. So if you ever go to Acapulco from Mexico City, chances are you take the 95D, not the 95... as it is much slower.
There’s also this one highway with the “M” prefix on it, the M40D, known as the northern arc highway which connects the outer edges of the Mexico City metropolitan area... I don’t know why it has that prefix... and I don’t think any other road does.
But cars are meant to ride the shoulder so that people can overtake. When the shoulder is dotted you should ride it, when it’s not you should use the entire lane.

We’ve got a colourful history with private jets ...

I think carretera federale is probably the term I’m seeking, based upon what you’ve stated here.

Are you a native Spanish speaker? If I could ever get my own Spanish to be half as good as your English, I’d be very happy.

Possibly, but it’s not like the system makes any sense. By the transport secretary’s own admission, we don’t actually have an established zero kilometer like in most highway systems. So they don’t really make any sense.

I am a native spanish speaker, but I attended a bilingual school ever since kindergarten.

If I can add to the plot, I think the registration is fake. The aviation databases don’t have any plane with that registration, and the only thing Google pulls up with that tail number are stories and photos/videos
about it being shot down. There isn’t a single photo of a plane with that tail number intact and not on that highway.

I’m no expert in plane burning but fuel is in the wings so if the fuselage is on fire it was most likely torched from inside with an added accelerant. If it was shot then there should be visible holes and damage to the wings and tail.

Doesn’t the FAM have a large number of helicopters that can be armed with missiles?
Maybe Bono and Jimmy Buffett were on board, this sort of thing seems to happen when those two get on a private plane

I suppose we probably have helicopters that can have missiles attached to them, we have a bunch of blackhawks... but I don’t think we have the budget or the training for missile gunships .. I could be wrong though.

I agree with that, I tried looking it up and I couldn’t find anything.
According to a local newspaper, the plane was flying without their localizer and it was caught by military radar; shot down when they did not comply.

I’m going with 2 or 3.

What data base are you using? If the registration is fake it would be a matter of finding all the Hawkers registered in Mexico with a private code (XB) and then matching to the paint job

right - and a missile likely would have done much more damage. Seems like one lucky helo pilot just spraying rounds hoping one will hit something - sometimes it really is better to be lucky than good....

Thanks! Ironically I think I’ve gotten better at writing in english after leaving high school because I don’t make as many spelling mistakes now as I did back then... also oppo helps since I’ve been corrected for spelling rather often. Specially for using strange terms like dreamt instead of dreamed.
